With a hint of summer in the air, the Festivities of Lisbon bring a full program of events to the city’s oldest neighborhoods, drawing thousands of people into the streets.
Santo António, widely honored in Lisbon as the city’s patron saint, sets the tone for the festivities, which reach their peak on the evening of June 12 with popular marches along the Avenida da Liberdade. On the afternoon of June 13, a procession in homage to his honor winds through the streets around the Sé Cathedral, adding a strong religious element. The saint is also traditionally associated with marriage.
Evenings come alive in Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods from Castelo to Mouraria, Graça, Alfama, Ajuda and Bairro Alto, with music and dancing to the rhythm of popular songs. Streets are decorated with colorful lights and garlands, while the scent of grilled sardines and sweet basil fills the air, alongside paper carnations and tributes to Santo António.
June is the main month of these festivities, but celebrations continue throughout the summer, with a wide range of events including fado, jazz, and other live music, performances in the city’s trams, film and theater festivals, sports events, and exhibitions.
