Each August, Viana do Castelo comes alive with the Feasts of Nossa Senhora da Agonia, a vibrant celebration honoring the Virgin of Agony, the patron saint of fishermen. Dating back to the 18th century, this deeply rooted festival pays tribute to the Virgin, long invoked by fishermen for protection and safe seas.
The streets fill with striking scenes, from the Mordomia Parade, where women in traditional dress display heirloom gold jewelry, to intricate flower carpets that decorate the paths of the processions. Both the religious procession and the maritime procession at to sea reflect the community’s strong connection to the ocean, while the Giants and Big-Headed Puppets bring a festive and playful spirit.
With traditional folk dances, a Heritage Parade, and an abundance of local food and music, the festival offers a lively and colorful celebration of culture, faith and community, drawing visitors from around the world.
