Experience mountain village life at the Agios Dimitrios Festival of Tradition and Culture, held each October in the green Marathasa Valley of the Troodos Mountains. This annual celebration takes place around the feast day of Saint Dimitrios, the village’s patron saint, blending local heritage, religious tradition, crafts, food, and music.
Agios Dimitrios is known for its red clay pottery, a traditional craft included in Cyprus’s national inventory of intangible cultural heritage. During the festival, visitors can watch local potters shape clay by hand and learn about the techniques used to create everyday objects such as flowerpots, pie-baking trays, beehives, and milk-storage pots.
Food traditions are also part of the experience. Guests can see how palouzes, a grape-based dessert, trachanas, a hearty fermented grain and milk soup, and zivania, a traditional pomace spirit, are made. Local products, fruit, delicacies, and drinks from the South Marathasa region are available to taste and buy.
With live Cypriot music and traditional dancing, the festival offers a warm and authentic introduction to the culture, flavors, and craftsmanship of rural Cyprus.
