A Journey Through Time

Switzerland’s history is deeply rooted in its landscapes, villages, and traditions, quietly preserved across the country. Exploring these places is a journey of reflection, discovery, and timeless beauty.

History beneath the arcades

In the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Bern, cobbled alleys and sandstone arcades wind their way through a perfectly preserved medieval cityscape. Discover the 13th-century Zytglogge (clock tower) or climb the spire of the Cathedral of St. Vincent—the largest and most important late-medieval church in Switzerland. From the top of its tower, marvel at a magnificent view of the snow-capped peaks of the Alps.

Fortress and faith

Built into the cliffs above the Rhône Valley, the Fortress of Saint-Maurice is a vast underground stronghold made up of three forts: Cindey, Scex, and Dailly, constructed between the First and Second World Wars. These tunnels once housed hundreds of soldiers in complete autonomy. Just a short walk away, the Abbey of Saint Maurice, a 1,500-year-old monastery and cultural heritage site, invites you to explore one of Europe’s richest ecclesiastical treasures.

Castles above the mist

In southern Switzerland, the castles of Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro form one of the most remarkable fortified ensembles in the Alpine region. Enjoy sweeping views over the charming town of Bellinzona from this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the footsteps of the Romans

The Via Romana links some of Switzerland’s most important Roman sites from Geneva to Augst. Along ancient roads, you can explore remarkable remnants of Roman civilization in places like Avenches, Orbe, and Solothurn. The route offers a unique way to experience history in stunning Swiss landscapes.

Beauty and resilience

Behind Schaffhausen’s beautifully preserved façades lies a dramatic story. During the Second World War, Allied forces mistakenly bombed the city. Today, the Old Town stands restored, inviting visitors to reflect on its resilience while admiring its architectural charm.

Beyond the peaks and postcards, Switzerland’s history unfolds in hidden corners—through ancient roads, silent abbeys, and storied towns. The moments that shaped a land are still here waiting for you to walk their paths.
