Buzzing legacy: Slovenia’s Carniolan honeybee
The Carniolan honeybee (Apis mellifera carnica) is native to Slovenia and a symbol of harmony between people and nature. Renowned for its gentle temperament, hardworking spirit and adaptability, it has deeply influenced Slovenian culture, from age-old folklore to traditional honey production.
Buzz-worthy experiences await across the country. At the APILAB Centre of Innovative Technologies – House of the Carniolan Honeybee in Višnja Gora, interactive exhibits bring Slovenia’s rich beekeeping heritage to life. In Radovljica, the Museum of Apiculture showcases centuries of beekeeping craftsmanship and innovation. For a multi-sensory experience, unwind with apitherapy sessions or test your skills in hands-on workshops where you can make your own beeswax candles and taste honey straight from the hive.
Importantly, Slovenia initiated World Bee Day, observed annually on May 20th — the birthday of Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping.
