Responsible cycling and culinary delights
Discover Slovenia in the most delicious and environmentally friendly way: on two wheels! The Slovenia Green Gourmet Route is an 11-day cycling adventure that connects destinations awarded the Slovenia Green label. This designation is part of the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, a national program encouraging and recognizing responsible tourism development. The label reflects a destination’s commitment to a greener future and responsible tourism practices.
The Slovenia Green Gourmet Route, based on the principles of responsible travel, offers the perfect blend of active adventures, scenic beauty and culinary excellence. Slovenia, European Region of Gastronomy 2021, continues to shine as a top culinary destination. The Slovenia Green Gourmet Route celebrates this by guiding you to Michelin-starred restaurants awarded the Michelin Green Star for their environmentally conscious approach to gastronomy — some of which feature the three or one-star designation! The route also includes Slovenia Green Cuisine providers, who are proud members of the Slovenia Green family.
Along the way, cyclists discover local gourmet delights, stay in boutique, family-run hotels and guesthouses, and soak up the beauty of Slovenia’s green countryside — from forest trails and vineyard-covered hills to spa retreats and farm stays. The route begins in Ljubljana, continues through Goriška Brda, the Vipava Valley and the Karst region, and then loops back through the capital and heads east to Sevnica, Podčetrtek, Ptuj and Maribor.
The cycling stages vary in difficulty, offering a balanced mix of gentle and more challenging rides to suit different skill levels and preferences. To enhance comfort and flexibility, the route thoughtfully incorporates three connecting train journeys, providing travelers with convenient options to rest, refresh or bypass sections that may be too long, steep, or otherwise less suitable for cycling.
During the 11-day tour, cyclists cover from 401 to 473 kilometers, depending on route variations. Navigating Slovenia’s diverse terrain, along the way they ascend a cumulative elevation of approximately 12,870 meters. The journey connects 10 distinguished Slovenia Green destinations, each certified for its commitment to environmental stewardship, offering not only breathtaking scenery but responsible tourism experiences that respect and preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the region.
Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a curious traveler with a passion for sustainability and great food, the Slovenia Green Gourmet Route offers an unforgettable journey where green values, culinary mastery and cycling adventure go hand in hand.
Also worth highlighting is that the Slovenia Green Gourmet Route is part of a broader network of Slovenia Green-certified cycling experiences. These include the Slovenia Green Capitals Route as well as the Slovenia Green Kočevsko Cycling Route, the Slovenia Green Wellness Route, and the Slovenia Green Solčava Panoramic Route.
