Journey by vintage train
Embark on an enchanting journey through the picturesque scenery of Western Serbia aboard the Šargan Eight museum train. This narrow-gauge railway winds its way through the stunning Šargan-Mokra Gora Nature Park, treating passengers to breathtaking views of dense forests and rugged mountains. Scenes of snow-covered mountains in this region inspired world renowned-director Emir Kusturica to build the wooden village of Mećavnik as a film set for the movie Life is a Miracle.
The train journey begins in the small village of Mokra Gora, voted the most beautiful village in the world by UNWTO in 2021. This is where the vintage steam locomotive starts its ascent through the Šargan Eight loop. The route includes 22 tunnels and many bridges, adding an element of adventure to the scenic ride. This nostalgic gem in Serbia traces its history to the mid-20th century. Originally part of the vast Yugoslav Railways network, the narrow-gauge railway served both practical and scenic purposes, connecting the towns of Užice and Višegrad. The defining segment of the Šargan Eight, the unique figure-eight loop, was completed in 1925, and allowed trains to ascend the steep slopes of the mountain to an elevation of 550 meters.
Over the years, the railway became an essential lifeline for remote mountain communities, facilitating the transport of goods and people. The highlight of the Šargan Eight experience is the breathtaking view from the panoramic platform near the station in Jatare. Here, passengers can disembark briefly to take in the sweeping landscape and take photos of this memorable natural beauty.
Today, the Šargan Eight scenic train journey is an immersive experience that allows travelers to connect with the natural splendor and cultural heritage of Serbia. Whether you’re a railway enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a unique adventure, the Šargan Eight promises an unforgettable voyage through some of the most captivating scenery in the Balkans.
