Your go-to for peaceful sojourns
If you dream of a holiday on peaceful islands, Poland is a great choice. The Polish coast hides unique pearls which offer as much charm and fewer attractions than their exotic counterparts.
Wolin is the largest Polish island, full of natural wonders. Woliński National Park is home to many species of rare animals, making it an ideal place for nature lovers and ornithologists. Add to this lush vegetation, deep forests, swamps and cliffs. From the very top of the highest cliffs on the Polish coast at Gosań you can admire the Bay of Pomerania and the towns of Międzyzdroje and Świnoujście. Sunsets here are spectacular. Hidden among the woods is Turquoise Lake, best seen from the top of Piaskowa Mountain. In Lake Czajcze is an island shaped like a croissant, with a peninsula in the middle with the remains of an early medieval settlement. Majestic bison make their home in the public-access bison enclosure on the island. The summer capital of the island is Międzyzdroje, known for its 400-meter-long wooden pier and the famous Avenue of Stars, where the most accomplished Polish actors and actresses have left their handprints.
Another notable island is Usedom. Although physically larger than Wolin, the greater part of it is in Germany. It is called “Island of the Sun” because the sun generously shines here for an average of 1,906 hours per year. A majority of the buildings in Świnoujście, a popular Polish health resort, are located on this island. Usedom is famous for its wide, sandy beaches, which stretch for over 10 kilometers and are among the most beautiful on the Polish coast. Walking along the promenade in Świnoujście, you can admire the sea and the elegant villas overlooking it. Usedom also provides many opportunities for those who like active leisure away from city noise; many cycling and walking trails are available.
Near the bustling port city of Gdańsk lies Sobieszewo Island — an oasis of peace, ideal for those seeking escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. In addition, its ecological status guarantees the preservation of nature. Long, sandy beaches and nature reserves such as Ptasi Raj and Mewia Łacha are home to a variety of bird species. The island has a unique microclimate and the air has a high content of iodine.
In the land of Polish lakes in Iława, around Lake Jeziorak (the longest and one of the largest lakes in Poland), lies the largest inland island in Poland: Wielka Żuława, covering an area of 82.4 hectares. You can relax here in peace, communing with nature and enjoying water attractions. The island also has a rich history: in its southeastern part are relics of a medieval settlement which existed from the 13th to the 15th century. The highest point of the settlement is at 116.8 meters above sea level, about 17 meters above the surface of the lake.
