Truffle hunting in Croatia’s ancient oak forests

Beneath the dense oak canopy in northern Istria, hidden under layers of rich soil, lies one of the most coveted natural treasures: the truffle. One of the best-kept secrets of the truffle world is that Croatia, specifically the Istrian Peninsula, produces some of the world’s best examples of this aromatic delicacy.

Each Autumn, during truffle season, it welcomes visitors to join the hunt for white gold. Here’s why you should visit the Peninsula: have a unique outdoor experience among stunning fall foliage, see Croatia in its off-season splendor without crowds and lines, and play a leading role in bringing truffles from forest to fork—your fork, as it happens! In other words, tweaking your dates to avoid peak season is an excellent travel hack. It will give you a more relaxed, richer experience and elevate each thing you do.

Your adventure will begin in the old growth oak forests as far northwest as you can go in Croatia. As your boots crunch over orange and yellow leaves, you’ll feel the gorgeous autumnal scent of southern Europe’s woods. All the while, the trained dogs that belong to truffle guides will be searching in a frenzy of excitement for the scent. This quiet, intimate hike perfectly unites two passions: food and nature. And then without warning, the dogs will spring into action, darting off to the base of a stout tree, barking and whining at a spot on the ground. You are then called upon to make the final move. You bend down, pulling away old leaves and the soft loam at the surface. Then you see it, a knot of white, like a little misshapen potato. You smell it and it’s unmistakable: you’ve struck gold.

In Croatia, the story never ends with discovery. After a successful hunt, it’s tradition to assemble at the home of one of the guides for a tasting. This capstone to a day’s searching is always splendid. Your legs may be sore from the hike, but your spirit will brim with the satisfaction of the hunt and the culinary adventure to come. Here are some of the dishes you’ll likely savor: fluffy scrambled eggs from local chickens covered in slivers of truffle, handmade Istrian pasta, generously topped with shaved truffle, or beef carpaccio brought to life with truffle oil. Even the dessert includes your find: chocolate cake with truffle honey or ice cream infused with truffle, an extraordinary marriage.

This truffle season, make your way to Croatia. You’ll enjoy great weather, peace, and authentic local interactions, all while unlocking an unexpected upgrade to your journey around Europe. Skip the stress and grab yourself a front-row seat to truly experience this continent and everything it has to offer.
