Three reasons to add Aarhus to your bucket list

If you’re looking for an alternative destination to Copenhagen, try Aarhus! Denmark’s second-largest city, it’s a vibrant hub that encapsulates the essence of Danish living with its laid-back charm, creative spirit, and welcoming attitude. Aarhus is even nicknamed the “City of Smiles,” so if that doesn’t sound inviting enough, check out some of the cool spots you can discover here.

Aarhus Ø

Wherever you are in Denmark, you’re never very far from the water. That’s especially true in Aarhus Ø — Aarhus’ modern waterfront district, which seamlessly blends innovative architecture, sustainable urban development, and a deep-rooted affinity for life by the sea. “Ø” is the Danish word for “island,” so what better way to explore the area than from the water? You can join an alternative tour of the city by paddleboard or take a free clean-up tour with Green Kayak, leaving the harbor in better condition than you found it. Another way to dive into local life is by taking a dip at the Aarhus Ø harbor baths, a floating urban pool complex. Designed by the Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group, it’s a beloved hangout spot for locals — and entry is free.

ARoS Aarhus Art Museum

Not exactly a hidden gem, but still one of the best ways to discover Aarhus is with a visit to the ARoS Art Museum. Located in the heart of the city, the museum presents an awe-inspiring collection, drawing visitors from near and far to immerse themselves in contemporary and classic artworks, larger-than-life installations, and internationally renowned exhibitions. While you’re there, don’t miss your chance to walk on an actual rainbow! Olafur Eliasson’s iconic Your rainbow panorama — a vivid, circular walkway on top of the ARoS Art Museum — offers breathtaking views of Aarhus’s cityscape that are simply unforgettable.

Aarhus Street Food

Aarhus is a real foodie city! Aarhus Street Food, located in an old bus garage, serves delicious street food from all corners of the world and is perfect proof of that. From traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches (smørrebrød) to Mexican tacos, Vietnamese bánh mì, gourmet burgers, and much more, this market is a paradise for food lovers seeking affordable alternatives and unique local experiences. With its relaxed and inviting urban atmosphere, Aarhus Street Food is a great place to eat elbow-to-elbow with Danes and other visitors.
