A journey through time
Embark on a captivating journey through Cyprus‘s rich history as you delve into the enchanting tale of the Cyprus Government Railway. Unveiled in 1905, this narrow-gauge railway network served as more than just a transportation link; it became a symbol of progress, connecting the charming towns of Famagusta, Nicosia, Morphou, and the Cyprus Mines Cooperation. Today, its historic remnants provide a unique experience for curious travelers seeking a taste of Cyprus’s past.
Step back to the early 1900s, when the Cyprus Government Railway laid its tracks using ancient stones, including those from the iconic Sigouri castle in Mesaoria, to fortify its foundations. Divided into three sections, each with its own charm, the railway extended from the coastal allure of Famagusta to the vibrant heart of Nicosia and beyond, to the quaint town of Morphou and through the foothills of the Troodos mountain range. Each section tells a story of progress that was inaugurated with ceremony by High Commissioner Sir Charles King-Hartman in 1905.
Parts of this historic route remain in the occupied area of the island, but visitors can still marvel at the engineering wonders that overcame natural obstacles, namely the 51 bridges along the first section and the 34 between Nicosia and Kalo Chorio. Picture the testing of the Mia Milia bridge in 1904, a spectacle captured in an old photograph, as the community gathered beneath to witness the birth of modern transportation. These bridges not only facilitated transportation but added a touch of grandeur to the Cypriot landscape, creating unforgettable moments for those who crossed them.
Discover the railway’s multifaceted role throughout history, transporting timber from Troodos and a variety of other products, and serving as a vital link during the World Wars. Yet despite its significance, the railway closed its tracks in 1951, when the last train departed from Nicosia, marking the end of an era. Today, remnants of the railway stand as silent witnesses to a bygone time.
Preserving the allure of the past, the transformed Evrychou station and its surroundings now house the Cyprus Railway Museum, a treasure trove of exhibits including the 1938 Cyprus Government railway timetable. A unique establishment on the island, within its Museum Rooms visitors can gaze at original documents, drawings, photographs, and various artifacts associated with Cyprus’ railway. The museum also exhibits scale models representing key stations and rolling stock.
For the curious traveler, Cyprus’s historic railway is more than just remnants from yesteryear; it’s an immersive experience into the island’s vibrant history. As you explore the Cyprus Government Railway Museum and the transformed village of Evrychou, let the echoes of the past guide your journey, creating memories that transcend time and connect you with the captivating tales of Cyprus’s railway heritage.
