Lakes and beaches known only to locals

This time, travel beyond the usual spots to places undiscovered by the masses and not found on typical tourist itineraries. These are Croatia’s most exquisite hidden treasures, known and cherished by those who truly see the country. You won’t find them in glossy brochures, nor will they be crowded. Instead, you’ll be immersed in breathtaking landscapes, timeless beauty, and a sense of discovery reserved for the discerning traveler. Discover a quieter, more authentic side of Croatia, where luxury lies in simplicity, nature, and the privilege of true escape.

Begin your coastal escape on Cres Island, home to the ancient village of Lubenice, perched on a cliff 378 meters above the sea. A unique beach, reachable only on foot or by boat, is one of this island’s untouched treasures. The reward? Crystal-clear waters and a refreshing swim that feels like a personal gift from nature. For anyone in search of peace and seclusion, this beach is nothing short of paradise.

Sail south to the Paklinski Islands, just off the glamorous and well-known shores of Hvar. Unlike the bustling island town, these islets offer pure escape. Car-free and covered in pine forests, they’re dotted with hidden rocky coves and quiet bays. Sveti Klement, the largest among them, is perfect for slow exploration, whether you’re swimming in hidden inlets or dining in a family-run konoba surrounded by lavender and rosemary.

Back on the mainland, discover Zavratnica, one of Croatia’s best-kept secrets. Located near Jablanac, this narrow, fjord-like inlet is flanked by cliffs and shimmering emerald waters. Zavratnica is situated in the Velebit Nature Park. A scenic coastal trail leads you from the village above, offering unforgettable views and peaceful moments with only the sounds of cicadas and the waves.

Inland, Croatia hides just as many treasures. Lake Vrana, the country’s largest natural lake, lies near Biograd na Moru. A designated nature park, it is home to over 250 bird species and thus a paradise for birdwatchers. The lake, perfect for active sports, offers picturesque viewpoints from the water for peaceful reflection. You can kayak through the marshes or relax in the shade of ancient olive trees.

Further north in Gorski Kotar, often called Croatia’s Green Heart, you’ll find Bajer Lake, near the town of Fužine. This peaceful, forest-fringed lake is beloved by locals and ideal for paddleboarding, rowboats, and lakeside picnics. Cool mountain air and dense woods create a refreshing contrast to the Adriatic coast.

Whether you’re following a coastal trail to a hidden cove or listening to birdsong beside a lake, Croatia’s lesser-known waterscapes promise unique inspiration. Here, time slows down. Paths are quieter. Nature envelopes you. Serenity is promised.
