A delicious Dutch approach to winter

Winter in the Netherlands transforms the landscape into a picturesque scene, with charming towns adorned in twinkling lights and the scent of seasonal treats wafting through the air. This season is rich in traditions that reflect Dutch culture and hospitality, making it a perfect time to experience the country’s festive spirit.

One of the most celebrated winter traditions is Sinterklaas, which kicks off in mid-November and culminates on December 5th. Throughout this period, you can find speculaas, spiced cookies shaped like figures, which are popular among both young and old. These delicious cookies are often enjoyed with a cup of hot cocoa and are a delightful reminder of the holiday season.

After a long day of shopping and sightseeing, settle down to fuel yourself with some hearty and warming Dutch favorites. Stamppot and hutspot are one-pot dishes of smoked sausage or bacon with creamy mashed potatoes, gravy, and vegetables such as carrots, kale, and endive. If you’re in need of a sugary pick-me-up, Chocomel, a rich chocolate drink, will certainly do the trick. Traditional Dutch apple tart is always recommended — in equal measures crumbly, gooey and cinnamon-y— or kerstbrood,  “Christmas bread”, a sweet bread full of candied fruit and almond paste.

As the year winds down, the Dutch prepare for New Year’s celebrations, where oliebollen take center stage. These deep-fried dough balls, often dusted with powdered sugar, are a must-try for visitors. Traditionally enjoyed on New Year’s Eve, they symbolize good luck for the coming year. Street vendors and bakeries across the country offer various versions, including those filled with raisins or apples. Sampling oliebollen is not just a treat; it’s a way to partake in a beloved Dutch tradition.

As you explore the Netherlands during winter, you’ll discover a country that embraces the season with warmth and joy. From savoring festive foods such as oliebollen and speculaas to engaging in time-honored traditions, your winter visit will be filled with unforgettable experiences. Embrace the cozy atmosphere and let the Dutch spirit of togetherness make your winter getaway truly special.
