Wander the tulip fields with your love

When spring arrives in Europe, few destinations rival the enchantment of the flowers in the Netherlands. Specifically, the Bollenstreek, or Flower Bulb Region, is perfect for those seeking a romantic escape. Stretching between Haarlem and Leiden, this stunning coastal area transforms into a kaleidoscope of color each spring, offering an unforgettable backdrop for romance.

Getting to this floral paradise is remarkably simple. From Amsterdam Central Station, direct trains to Haarlem or Leiden take just 15-20 minutes, making the region ideal for day trips or longer stays. Travelers arriving at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol will find the journey even shorter, with trains reaching nearby towns in under 15 minutes. Renting a car offers the most flexibility for exploring the countryside at your own pace, allowing for spontaneous stops at roadside flower stalls and hidden fields.

The crown jewel of the Bollenstreek calendar is the Bloemencorso Bollenstreek, or Flower Parade, held annually in late April. This spectacular procession features elaborate floats decorated with millions of hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils, winding through charming towns from Noordwijk to Haarlem. People line the streets to witness these moving masterpieces passing through picturesque Dutch villages.

Beyond the parade, the region reveals countless romantic moments. Keukenhof Gardens, often called the “Garden of Europe,” showcases over seven million bulbs across 79 acres of meticulously designed landscapes. The gardens are open from mid-March through mid-May, perfectly timed with peak blooming season.

For those seeking a more intimate experience, cycling through the endless bulb fields offers pure magic. Rental bikes are available in every town, and designated flower routes guide riders past striped fields of red, yellow, pink, and purple stretching toward the horizon. The flat terrain makes cycling accessible, and the quiet country roads invite leisurely exploration.

A uniquely interactive experience awaits at pick-your-own flower farms scattered throughout the region. These working farms welcome visitors to wander the fields with scissors and baskets, selecting their own fresh-cut blooms. It’s an opportunity to create a personalized bouquet while supporting local growers, and the experience feels worlds away from tourist crowds.

The Bollenstreek represents more than just beautiful flowers — it’s a celebration of nature’s renewal and beauty, making it an ideal setting for couples to connect and create lasting memories together in one of Europe’s most colorful corners.
