The Hague, “the city by the sea”

Quaint Dutch cities lined with canals may typify the Netherlands, but its nearly 300 miles of stunning North Sea coastline include some of Europe’s most pristine and uncrowded beaches. At the heart of this coastal paradise is The Hague, also known as “the city by the sea.”

The Hague’s unique position as a seat of international power and a seaside destination makes it an exceptional base for exploring the Dutch coast. As the political capital of the Netherlands, the city is home to the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, and numerous other international organizations.

Beyond its political significance, The Hague’s royal heritage and cultural treasures captivate visitors. The magnificent Gothic Binnenhof complex has been the center of Dutch politics for over 800 years. Art enthusiasts flock to the world-renowned Mauritshuis museum, home to Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring and other Dutch Golden Age masterpieces. The opulent Peace Palace stands as a symbol of international justice and diplomacy.

Tree-lined boulevards, elegant shopping areas, and a vibrant cultural scene are a perfect contrast to the natural beauty awaiting just minutes away at the coast. The Hague’s blend of urban liveliness and seaside tranquility are truly special.

Scheveningen

Scheveningen, locally the most famous beach resort, is surprisingly unknown internationally. Its expansive, golden sand beach has attracted visitors since the 19th century, when it first gained popularity as a fashionable seaside retreat. Today, Scheveningen offers the perfect balance of amenities and natural beauty, with its iconic pier extending into the North Sea and providing panoramic coastal views.

The beach transforms with the seasons, offering summer visitors bustling beach clubs, water sports, and the famous Scheveningen Sculpture Festival, while winter brings dramatic storm-watching opportunities and peaceful walks along the foam-kissed shore. The main boulevard features excellent seafood restaurants where you can savor fresh a North Sea catch while watching the sunset paint the sky in brilliant oranges and pinks.

Kijkduin

Just south of Scheveningen lies Kijkduin, a hidden gem that locals prefer. This quieter beach offers a more intimate coastal experience; its expansive dunes provide natural windbreaks and create secluded spots perfect for relaxation. Kijkduin’s charm lies in its authenticity: here, Dutch families build sandcastles, locals walk their dogs along the surf line, and a genuine sense of community exists that’s increasingly rare at iconic destinations. The dunes’ marked trails offer excellent hiking and cycling, where you might spot native wildlife and rare coastal plants.

Clearly, these beautiful Dutch beaches prove that the Netherlands offers far more than its famous cultural attractions. With The Hague as your sophisticated home base, discovering these coastal treasures becomes an unforgettable journey where international elegance meets timeless natural beauty.
