Explore a biodiverse wonderland
Cyprus, an island steeped in ancient history and cultural splendor, also boasts a vibrant and diverse ecosystem that is fabulous for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. From the majestic heights of the Troodos Mountains to the serene coastal landscapes, Cyprus offers a rich tapestry of habitats that support a remarkable array of flora and fauna.
The island’s pristine coastline is not only a sun-soaked paradise for beachgoers but also a crucial habitat for various wildlife species. The azure waters are home to a variety of marine life including sea turtles. Some of the island’s beaches serve as nesting grounds for both the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). They return year after year to lay their eggs in the sandy shores of Cyprus; witnessing these tiny creatures hatching is a truly awe-inspiring experience. The crystal-clear waters provide a window into the underwater realm, where rocky reefs support a myriad of marine species. One can encounter curious creatures such as the shy seahorse, the elusive and endangered Mediterranean monk seal, and only rarely, the majestic sunfish.
Cyprus’ location in the Mediterranean is along many bird migratory routes, making it a heaven for birdwatchers. The wetlands of Larnaca, including the famous Larnaka Salt Lake, host thousands of migratory birds during their journeys between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Flamingos, herons, and ducks are among the many species that grace these wetlands. Akrotiri Salt Lake in Limassol also provides a sanctuary for migratory birds, and birdwatching hides allow visitors to observe these feathered travelers in their natural habitats. Athalassa National Park, Oroklini Lake, Kavo Gkreko National Park and the Troodos mountains are homelands to many endemic and migratory birds as well.
The Troodos Mountains are also a haven for endemic plant species, and their towering peaks provide a refuge for elusive and enchanting creatures. The mouflon, a wild sheep native to Cyprus, can often be spotted roaming the slopes. These resilient animals have thrived in this rugged terrain for centuries and observing them in their natural habitat is a humbling experience. As mentioned above, the Troodos Mountain region is also home to various bird species, including the Cyprus warbler and the spectacular griffon vulture. Keep an eye out for the Cyprus scops owl, a small and secretive bird that inhabits the island’s woodlands and adds a touch of mystery to the forested realms.
Cyprus’ wildlife is a testament to the island’s natural beauty and ecological significance, offering a captivating journey into the heart of the natural world. As you explore its diverse landscapes and encounter its remarkable inhabitants, you’ll find yourself immersed in the intricate and enchanting web of life that thrives on this Mediterranean jewel.
