Greener by train, by foot, and by bike

Czechia offers hiking and cycling enthusiasts varied scenery, a dense network of marked trails, and easy connections to travel between destinations.  Get some inspiration for your next trip from these great routes and destinations in Czechia.

From Prague to Karlštejn Castle

Prague, one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, offers not only historical landmarks and rich culture but also excellent hiking opportunities — and it’s  a great starting point for trips around Czechia. Try the Prague Semmering line; on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, a historic motor train runs along this scenic route, crossing the viaduct in Prokop Valley.

Reach Karlštejn Castle from Prague in several different ways:  If you opt for a cycling adventure, the route along the Berounka River is ideal, an easy ride with plenty of scenic views. A hiking route follows a similar path. For those who seek greater comfort, the simplest option is to take a train from Prague — the journey takes about 40 minutes, with frequent departures.

In the footsteps of Kingdom Come

How about touring the UNESCO gem of Kutná Hora, also the setting for the gaming hit Kingdom Come: Deliverance II? You can enjoy walks filled with historical treasures. Gaming enthusiasts can take the Posázaví Pacific train into the picturesque Central Bohemian countryside, where the meandering Sázava River adds to the charm. A regular train departs from Prague’s main railway station to the town of Sázava, home to a monastery with an unfinished Gothic church, and to Rataje nad Sázavou, where you’ll find a château and other historical landmarks.

Elbe River cycle route

One of the most popular cycling routes follows the course of the Elbe River from its mountain source in the Krkonoše Mountains all the way into Germany. The Elbe Trail is suitable even for families with children. From Prague, you can easily reach several beautiful sections by train. Popular spots include the spa town of Poděbrady, and in North Bohemia, the scenic route around Ústí nad Labem or Děčín, that leads into Bohemian Switzerland National Park. Train connections are frequent and convenient.

Tip: Czech Railways and other transport providers offer special carriages for bicycle transport, allowing you to reach your favorite routes without a long ride to the starting point. In every larger city, you can also rent shared bikes and scooters.

Spa Retreats and Wine Trails

A great way to enjoy an extended weekend is a visit to the Luhačovice spa. Simply change trains in Brno for a connection towards Uherské Hradiště and Zlín, whence you can easily reach the largest spa town in eastern Czechia. Luhačovice offers beautiful walks to mineral springs with healing waters and around its reservoir and spa parks. If you prefer wine regions, head from Brno to the Lednice-Valtice area or Mikulov, located in the heart of the Pálava wine region. Once there, enjoy strolls through vineyards, enjoy excellent gastronomy, hike up Svatý kopeček, or take a tour of the château.
