Savor the best Czech meat-free options

We have great news for all vegetarians, vegans, fruitarians and other fans of a green diet. Even in this land of meat lovers, you’ll find plenty of healthy delicacies and specialties to enjoy. It’s a long time since the only “green” option available in Czechia was fried cheese. Come and tuck in, there’s plenty to satisfy even the most demanding palates.

Healthy veggie options in Prague

Purely plant-based bistros and restaurants are springing up all over Czechia. You can enjoy a great meal in a place that serves up pretty much everything. Many mainstream restaurants are adding tasty new dishes to their vegetarian menus and can easily adapt other dishes to suit your preferences. Just ask the waiter!

The original concept of vegetarian and sustainable cuisine, where everything is fresh, healthy, local, seasonal, and tasty can be found at the Green Table bistro. It also has a hydroponic farm packed with sprouts and herbs. Green Table is in the center of Prague, just a short walk from Masaryk train station.

You can enjoy a veggie breakfast at the Café Savoy. For great food and delicious hummus, check out Paprika restaurant. Two long-standing mainstays on the vegetarian scene are right in the historical center of Prague: Maitrea, nestled in the enchanting alley of Týnská Street near Old Town Square, and Lehká hlava. The latter is a haven of peace and quiet, with a menu inspired by cuisines from around the world. It’s worth a visit just to admire the artistic interior.

A piece of the world on a plate

You can’t go wrong with the Dhaba Beas vegetarian bistro chain, which has restaurants all over Czechia. There are several branches in Prague. Equally well-known is the Forky’s international network of vegan bistros and restaurants, which specializes in sustainable food and lifestyle. Their purely plant-based bistros are located in Prague, Brno, Liberec and Ostrava.

In Liberec, on the way to or from the famous Regional Gallery, check out the Mikyna family bistro and café, where original vegetarian dishes made from local ingredients are offered every day. If you find yourself in the center of Ostrava, try the Kocouří způsoby vegan bistro; in Brno, besides Rebia, you might also try Pilgrim, while in the center of Olomouc you’ll find the ever-popular Green Bar. For a salad, try Café Fara in the picturesque setting of south Moravia’s vineyards, not far from Mikulov. In Český Krumlov visit the stylish vegetarian Lebanese restaurant Laibon, set against the beautiful backdrop of this charming South Bohemian town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

To the markets and orchards

Besides restaurants and bistros, you can get the best ingredients straight from the farmers’ markets. Traditional events include the Apple Juicing and Harvest on the grounds of Ctěnice Chateau, the Autumn Plum Markets in České Budějovice (October), and the popular Pumpkin Autumn event at Prague’s Botanical Garden in Troja (October).
