Hiking in Europe gave me the chance to explore the continent’s different landscapes, from rugged mountains to serene coastal paths. Europe is home to trails that cater to hikers of all levels. Each trail has its wonders, making hiking in Europe a special adventure and the perfect continent for your hiking dreams. Whether you’re looking for forests, mountains, or cultural immersion, Europe’s hiking trails are something special, from day hikes all the way to long-distance trails. I’ve lined up some of my favorite hikes and hope to inspire you to get out there and enjoy Europe at its finest!

Mullerthal
The Mullerthal Region in Luxembourg is known for its sandstone rock formations and one of Europe’s most beautiful hiking networks: the Mullerthal Trail. From the historic towns of Echternach, Beaufort, and Berdorf you can explore three loops covering 112 kilometers. You’ll wander through forests with large rock formations, narrow crevices, and deep canyons. Along the way, you’ll pass castles and rivers, proving that a small country can offer big adventures.

Schluchtensteig
The Schluchtensteig trail in the heart of Germany’s Black Forest is perfect for both beginners and seasoned hikers. Approximately 119 kilometers long, this trail blends nature and culture in Germany’s Baden-Württemberg region. Hike through dense forests, alongside lakes including the Schluchsee, and across waterfalls. At higher points, you might even glimpse the 4,000-meter-high mountain peaks in Switzerland!

Barentrek
In the Jungfrau Region of Bernese Oberland you’ll find one of Switzerland’s best hiking trails: the Bärentrek. This trail goes through charming alpine villages such as Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, and Adelboden. You’ll stay in mountain huts and lodges as you hike across alpine meadows and along steep mountain paths. This combination of breathtaking scenery and cultural immersion makes the Bärentrek a perfect way to experience Switzerland.

Dolomites UNESCO Geotrail
The 176-kilometer Dolomites UNESCO Geotrail is a UNESCO World Heritage site, perfect if you want a challenging and rewarding adventure. This trail is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the geological history that shaped these mountains, with informative plaques and viewpoints along the way. Ideal for seasoned hikers, the Dolomites UNESCO Geotrail is perfect for discovering this region from hut to hut, right into the heart of one of Italy’s most spectacular mountain ranges.

Alpe Adria Trail
The Alpe Adria Trail stretches across Austria, Slovenia, and Italy, starting at Austria’s highest peak, the Grossglockner, and ending in Muggia near Trieste, Italy. This trail covers about 750 kilometers divided into 43 stages, each offering a unique glimpse into the landscapes, cultures, and histories of these regions. Whether you’re trekking through alpine meadows or along coastal stretches, the Alpe Adria Trail will be a memorable journey.
