Learning to say please and thank you in foreign languages is always a welcomed gesture, but be assured that English is widely used throughout Europe.
However, don’t be afraid to use your second languages learned at school or elsewhere, such as Spanish, French or German. The mere gesture of trying is usually met with grace and appreciation. It is certainly helpful to learn a few phrases in the local language, as it will enrich your experience and help you find your way around. Some key phrases to learn include: hello, goodbye, please, thank you, where is, do you speak English, as well as directions (left, right, and straight ahead). Purchase a dictionary before your departure; many pocket-sized editions with durable vinyl covers are available, which slip easily into a handbag or backpack.
A good idea is to ask the concierge or desk manager at your hotel to write directions in the local language on the back of the hotel’s business card or stationery, thus insuring that you can get assistance from people who don’t speak English. When you speak in English, do so clearly, distinctly and slowly, but not necessarily more loudly – a common error that rarely results in better understanding!
