Water Sports in the Black Sea

Water sports in the Black Sea region notable include paddling around the Danube Delta in Romania, home to unsurpassed numbers of birds, fun in the sun at Bulgarian resorts, and the world’s fastest-flowing river, not to mention diving in some Europe’s bluest-of-blue waters in Turkey.

Turkey, with hundreds of rivers, provides great opportunities for water sports like rafting, canoeing and water-skiing. The most famous is the River Coruh, renowned internationally as one of the fastest flowing in the world; the Altiparmak flows through a strikingly beautiful valley enveloped by high mountains. Recommended for canoeing and rafting, the river has a high flow-rate year round because of the run-off of melting snow.
Within the seas of Turkey, divers can discover a fascinating submerged world, from underwater caverns to sunken ships and even the remains of ancient cities. The islands in the open seas around Tekirova have a wonderful array of sea life including huge thornback rays and dolphins can be seen throughout the year.

The resorts ringing the beaches of Bulgaria on the Black Sea coast offer all the aquatic entertainment you’d expect at these highly popular holiday retreats: swimming, boating, water-skiing, para-sailing, and beach-based games. A plenitude of freshwater lakes and rivers also provide for wet and wild active holidays including kayaking and diving to wrecks and caves.

Rafting in Romania is the thing to do; the most popular rafting rivers are Crisul Repede, Jiu, Cerna and Nera. Get suited up and safely established with a guide, and you’ll experience the thrill of white water and gorgeous scenery rushing by in a whirl of fun.
